What’s the deal with green LED lights on top of construction vehicles in Florida?

Trooper Steve answers viewer questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions and shares tips about the rules of the road, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.

A News 6 viewer named Derren on Tuesday asked, “I have recently seen construction vehicles with green LED lights. Is this legal? I thought it was only security vehicles.”

Trooper Steve said he recently noticed the same thing.

“I was on my way to work when I saw green LED lights flashing from a construction vehicle,” he said. “Being a nerd with traffic lights, I knew this was solely for security vehicles. Well, I was wrong.”

About a year ago, laws changed to allow a combination of green and amber lights atop a construction vehicle while it is in an active construction zone.

“So, what’s the takeaway?” Trooper Steve said. “If you see flashing lights, be aware.”
