Crash shuts down I-95 in Brevard County (FDOT)

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A crash on Interstate 95 in Brevard County killed one person, left three others hurt and forced the temporary closure of all southbound lanes Sunday morning near Micco, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 10:30 a.m. in the area of mile marker 165, not far from St. Johns Heritage Parkway. Three victims were hospitalized — all in critical condition — and one person was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

An FHP crash report identified the person who died as an 18-year-old Merritt Island man and the three others who suffered critical injuries as two 18-year-old Cocoa women and a 17-year-old Merritt Island boy. The man who died was driving an SUV that the three others were riding in as passengers, the report states, adding none of the four occupants were wearing seat belts in the crash.

The SUV — a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder — was traveling southbound on I-95 at mile marker 165 when the driver overcorrected to the right for unknown reasons, troopers said. The Nissan ran off the roadway to the right, crossing all southbound lanes before overturning several times onto the outside shoulder, reportedly ejecting each of the four occupants.

Traffic was backed up to before mile marker 166 after the crash and was otherwise diverted onto St. Johns Heritage Parkway, according to FDOT. All lanes had been reopened by 2 p.m., according to FHP.

An investigation is ongoing.
