Man faces charges after leading troopers on 135 mph chase on I-4 in Volusia County

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 35-year-old man faces multiple charges after he led troopers on a high-speed chase at speeds over 100 mph on I-4 chase on Monday afternoon, according to a news release.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said troopers were in pursuit of a black Kia K5 for aggressive driving in the westbound lanes of I-4 at mile marker 129 around 2 p.m.

Troopers said after conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle, they saw the male driver and female passenger switch seats.

After telling the occupants that they were observed switching seats, the man troopers identified as the driver, told troopers that he did not have identification.

“Suddenly, the female exited the vehicle with both her hands up and the male got into the driver seat, looked me in the eyes and then fled the scene of the traffic stop,” according to an arrest report.

Troopers said they pursued the vehicle on the interstate at speeds of “135 miles per hour for most of the pursuit.”

The Kia exited the interstate at mile marker 118 before traveling west on State Road 44 and into DeLand, according to the FHP.

According to the report, as the vehicle slowed, troopers were able to successfully conduct a PIT maneuver, which caused the Kia to strike a privacy fence at Wade Avenue and State Road 44.

According to the release, the driver – later identified as Patrick Gordon – exited the vehicle and ran from troopers into a woodline.

After law enforcement set up a perimeter, Gordon was located and taken into custody after about 45 minutes, according to the FHP.

Troopers said Gordon’s “criminal history show he has a total of 31 Felony criminal charges with 11 Felony Convictions.” In addition, he had a suspended driver’s license and records show that he has three previous convictions for driving while his was license suspended.

According to the report, a search of the vehicle revealed over three grams of cocaine and fentanyl as well as a magazine loaded with eight hollow point rounds of ammunition.

Gordon was booked into the Volusia County jail and faces multiple felony charges, including narcotic charges. He also had a warrant out of Osceola County, troopers said.
