76-year-old bicyclist killed in Marion County crash

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A 76-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by a pickup truck Tuesday morning in Marion County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the fatal crash happened around 6:40 a.m. on County Road 464 near Lake Road.

According to an FHP crash report, the pickup truck – driven by a 31-year-old Ocala man – was westbound on County Road 464, east of Lake Road, in the outside lane.

At the same time, the bicyclist, an Ocala man, was traveling west on County Road 464, east of Lake Road, on the north paved shoulder.

Troopers said the man on the bicycle “suddenly swerved” into the outside travel lane of westbound County Road 464, and the right front corner of the truck collided with the bicyclist.

According to the report, the man and his bicycle were propelled north onto the grassy shoulder. The truck then traveled off the road onto the grassy shoulder and came to final rest facing northwest, troopers said.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
