POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A pickup truck and cargo train crashed on the railroad tracks in Lakeland on Tuesday afternoon, leaving one person dead, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
In a release, deputies said the crash happened around 3:25 p.m. on the tracks near Kathleen Tire Shop along Kathleen Road, between Deeson and Spivey Roads.

The pickup truck driver died at the scene, though there didn’t appear to be anyone else inside the truck, the release shows.
In addition, the cargo train was empty, meaning it wasn’t hauling any cargo, deputies added.

As first responders deal with the aftermath of the crash, drivers are urged to avoid the area until further notice.
