Driver who ran stop sign dies after school bus crash in Sumter County, FHP says

14 students were on board the bus

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A driver is dead after colliding with a school bus in Sumter County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say a 68-year-old woman driving a Ford Escort ran a stop sign Friday morning at the intersection of County Road 222 and County Road 223, just north of County Road 462, west of U.S. 301.

The car entered the intersection where a Sumter County School Bus was traveling, and the bus struck the car, troopers say.

The driver of the Ford Escort was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, while the driver of the school bus, a 50-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. On Wednesday, FHP announced the 68-year-old driver died from her injuries.

There were also 14 middle and high school students on board the bus at the time of the crash. All of them were released to their parents.

The crash is under investigation.
