The FHP said the deputy was driving a Ford F-150 north on U.S. 301 when his pickup truck entered the southbound lane for an unknown reason and was struck nearly head-on by a flatbed tractor-trailer driven by a 32-year-old Orlando man.

The deputy died at the scene, the FHP said.

The Orlando man was not hurt, according to troopers.

U.S. 301 will remain closed for an extended period of time due to damage to the road, the FHP said.
