MELBOURNE, Fla. – A pedestrian died in Melbourne after lying down in a roadway and being struck by an SUV, according to police.

The crash occurred around 11:26 p.m. Friday, the Melbourne Police Department said in a news release.

Officers responded to the area of the Melbourne Causeway, west of the high-rise, the release states.

An initial investigation suggested the pedestrian — identified as James Gaudet, 43 — laid down on the roadway inside of the travel lanes before being struck by a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was traveling west on the Melbourne Causeway, police said, adding it did not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

An investigation is said to be ongoing.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact traffic homicide investigators by calling 321-616-6116.
