WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – A driver was sent to the hospital as a trauma alert Wednesday and later died after their pickup truck plowed through a fence and into a pond in Winter Garden.
According to Winter Garden police, officers responded to crash around 1:40 p.m. at the intersection of 9th Street and State Road 50.

Police said a vehicle sideswiped the pickup, then ran the truck off of the road. The pickup went through a fence and into a pond, where it become completely submerged, officials said.

Capt. Scott Allen, of the Winter Garden Police Department, said that one of his officers swam to the vehicle and was able to get a window open but could not get the driver out.
According to Allen, the dive team with the Orange County Fire Department responded and was able to pull the driver out.
The pickup truck driver was taken to the hospital with potential life-threatening injuries, officials said.
In an update Thursday, Winter Garden police said that the driver died Wednesday at the hospital, adding that while roads were slightly wet from rain at the time of the crash, investigators are not 100% positive if the crash was rain-related.
