ORANGE CITY, Fla. – A man riding as a passenger in a pickup truck died Thursday night after being ejected from the vehicle and hit by a car in Orange City, according to police.

The situation unfolded around 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of 17/92 and May Street, the Orange City Police Department said in a news release.

Gianfranco Scirocco, 53, of DeLand, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Investigators said that Scirocco was riding as a passenger in a pickup truck being driven by a 54-year-old Orange City woman, adding he was ejected from the vehicle for unknown reasons as the woman attempted to make a U-turn from southbound 17/92.

After being ejected from the pickup truck, a hatchback being driven behind the truck by a 47-year-old Astor man struck Scirocco, police said, adding the driver of the hatchback was unable to avoid the crash.

Both vehicles immediately stopped and police and Orange City Fire Department personnel soon responded, the release states.

Witnesses told police that the pickup truck was driving erratically and that the passenger door continued to open and close on the road, according to the release.

The police department is still investigating.
