At the same time, a pedestrian – identified as a 59-year-old man from The Villages – was attempting to cross U.S. Highway 301 “from a local bar,” the FHP said.

Troopers said the man entered the road, traveling east across U.S. Highway 301 into the SUV’s travel lane.

According to the report, the driver was “unable to observe the pedestrian crossing the roadway,” causing the front of the SUV to strike the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead, troopers said. Officials did not specify if the man died at the scene or at the hospital.

The driver of the SUV, identified as a 57-year-old Ocala man, was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
