ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A Windermere High School student is one of four people who were killed late Saturday in a crash in Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 10:50 p.m. on Central Florida Parkway near Whitley Place.
The FHP confirmed Monday morning that one of the people killed in the wreck was Sammy Lahik, a senior at Windermere High School, according to the district.
According to a crash report, a Toyota Camry and a BMW M2 were both speeding east on Central Florida Parkway. The Toyota was ahead of the BMW and the BMW was attempting to get in front of the Toyota, colliding with the front left of the vehicle.
The collision caused the two vehicles to go off the roadway.
The Toyota struck a light pole and several trees, while the BMW also struck several trees. A passenger in the back seat of the Toyota, an 18-year-old Windermere man, was ejected from the vehicle, according to the crash report.
The Toyota driver, a 20-year-old Kissimmee man, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and his other passenger, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The BMW driver, a 26-year-old Orlando man, was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger, a 23-year-old Orlando woman, was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Maria Vazquez shared a statement following the wreck:
We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Windermere High senior Sammy Lahik, who was involved in a fatal car accident on Saturday night. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and the entire Windermere community during this incredibly difficult time. The sudden passing of a young life is an unimaginable loss, and we are committed to providing support for our students and staff as they navigate this grief. Counselors will be available for anyone in need of support. Please keep Sammy’s loved ones and the Windermere High School community in your thoughts as they mourn this profound loss.
This crash comes weeks after a Lake Nona High School student was killed in a fiery crash on Narcoossee Road.
The student, identified by the school as Anthony Sanchez, was one of the drivers and one of three students injured in the crash.
According to the Orlando Police Department, the crash was caused by speeding and the drivers losing control of their vehicles.
An investigation is ongoing.
