ORLANDO, Fla. – Speeding? Look up — you might have company in the sky!
We’ve all seen them, those mysterious signs on the highway that read, “Speed Limit Enforced by Aircraft.” And let’s be honest, most drivers have had the same reaction: Yeah, right.
But here’s the thing — yes, aircraft speed enforcement is real, and yes, the Florida Highway Patrol actually does it.
The idea of getting pulled over by a trooper who just parachuted down from a Cessna might be a bit dramatic (and, OK, not exactly how it works), but make no mistake; just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean they don’t see you.
FHP uses specially trained pilots in aircraft strategically stationed throughout the state to clock speeding drivers from above. These aerial troopers work with ground units to pinpoint violators and radio ahead to their fellow troopers on the ground, who will then make the stop. So, while you might be keeping an eye out for the usual roadside patrols, there’s a good chance that someone up in the clouds has already clocked your speed.
Moral of the story? Those signs aren’t just for decoration. Next time you’re tempted to push the pedal a little too hard, remember — Florida’s skies might just have their eyes on you!
