Protecting your kids from playground burns during hot Florida days

Even moderately warm days can pose risk of burns

ORLANDO, Fla. – As temperatures rise across Central Florida, families are gearing up for more beach days, pool outings and, of course, playground adventures.

However, with the warmer temperatures comes a hidden danger that parents need to be mindful of: playground equipment can become scorching hot even on moderately warm days, posing a risk of burns to children’s delicate skin in a matter of seconds.

Bill Pandos, the Parks and Recreation manager in Seminole County, emphasizes the importance of taking precautions before letting children loose on playgrounds, especially during hot afternoons.

“Check a couple of surfaces out there on equipment before letting them run, especially if it’s a sunny day and it’s in the middle of the afternoon,” he advises. “Depending on its age, some materials wear off to where those components can be warm to touch and they can cause burns.”

Pandos recommends parents to physically test the equipment themselves by placing their hand on various surfaces to gauge the temperature. Playground equipment, he warns, could reach temperatures as high as 128 degrees Fahrenheit or even hotter on scorching days, potentially causing serious injury to unsuspecting children.

Timing is crucial when it comes to playground outings. Pandos suggests aiming for mornings or late afternoons when the sun’s intensity is lower, minimizing the risk of burns.

The peak heat hours, typically between noon and 4 p.m., are when playground equipment is most likely to become dangerously hot due to the absorption and radiance of heat by atmospheric gases.

In the unfortunate event of a burn, immediate action is necessary. Pandos advises applying ice or cool water to the affected area for 10-15 minutes and promptly seeking medical attention. Additionally, he recommends outfitting children in long pants and sturdy shoes, such as sneakers, to provide an extra layer of protection against burns.

Ultimately, while playgrounds are a cherished space for children to play and socialize, parents must remain vigilant, especially during hot weather conditions. By being proactive in checking equipment temperature and timing outings appropriately, families can ensure that their little ones stay safe and injury-free while enjoying their outdoor adventures.
