Tornado snaps power poles, damages homes in Melbourne

EF-0 tornado stayed on ground for 3 minutes, weather officials say

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A tornado touched down Thursday in Brevard County, traveling through a neighborhood for a few minutes and damaging homes as severe weather swept through the area.

According to the National Weather Service, the EF-0 tornado touched down around 5:56 p.m. near Adams Avenue and moved south-southeast toward Sarno Road.

“In this area, multiple homes experienced carport, roof, siding, and soffit damage. Several trees were uprooted or partially uprooted, large tree branches were scattered, and a few power poles were snapped,” the NWS preliminary report said.

There were no reported injuries. The Red Cross says it has sent a team to help Brevard County Emergency Management assess and provide any needs.

At its peak, the tornado had estimated wind speeds of 75 mph.

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for Brevard County until 6:45 p.m.
