ORLANDO, Fla. – Tropical Storm Chris formed in the Gulf of Mexico late Monday night, lashing eastern Mexico with heavy rain.
As of early Monday, Chris had maximum sustained winds near 40 mph, with higher gusts as it moved onshore. After several hours over land, Chris has weakened into a tropical depression and will continue to dissipate over the higher terrain later in the day.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Carriacou Island with 150 mph winds.
On the heels of Beryl, another disturbance has a medium chance for tropical development. Invest 96L, has a 30% chance for development over the next two days and a 60% chance over the next week.
The next two names for the 2024 hurricane season are Debby and Ernesto.
