Debby makes landfall near Steinhatchee in Big Bend region

ORLANDO, Fla.Debby officially made landfall Monday in the Florida Big Bend region as a Category 1 hurricane.

As of 11 a.m., Debby has maximum sustained winds at 70 mph and is 35 miles west of Lake City, Florida, and about 120 miles south of Valdosta, Georgia. The storm is heading north-northeast at 10 mph. It is now back to tropical storm status.

Debby made landfall around 7 a.m. near Steinhatchee in the Florida Big Bend region. Debby is the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

Debby will move slowly across northern Florida and southern Georgia on Monday and Tuesday. It will then weaken after the storm moves inland.

The NHC also highlighted a new area in the Atlantic being monitored for development. That tropical wave has a 10% chance of developing into a tropical system in the next two days and a 20% chance in the next seven days.

Hurricane season runs through November.
