ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center on Thursday increased the chances of development for a tropical wave in the Atlantic.

The disturbance in the central tropical Atlantic now has a 50% chance of development in the next seven days, and a 10% in the next two.

The tropical wave could become a tropical depression early next week as it moves west at 10 to 15 mph, approaching the Lesser Antilles, the NHC said.

It is then expected to move west, northwest across parts of the eastern Caribbean Sea.

In addition, the NHC is now monitoring an area of interest in the Atlantic off the coast of West Africa, which has a 20% chance of development over the next seven days.

While there are no immediate concerns for Central Florida, we will keep a close eye on its progress as it moves toward the eastern Caribbean islands into the first few days of September.

The peak of hurricane season is Sept. 10.

Hurricane season runs through November.
