ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center is monitoring three tropical waves as we near the peak of hurricane season.
Two of the waves could become tropical depressions later this week.
The first wave is over Hispaniola and parts of the central Caribbean Sea. It is expected to move west and a tropical depression could form later this week when it reaches the western Caribbean Sea and the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. It has a 40% chance of development in the next seven days.
The next wave is in the eastern Atlantic and could become a tropical depression while moving west-northwest. It has a 40% chance of development in the next seven days.
The third tropical wave is midway between the west coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles. Some slow development is possible, but environmental conditions are not expected to be favorable for any more development. It has a 10% chance of development in the next seven days.
The peak of hurricane season is Sept. 10.
Hurricane season runs through November.
