ORLANDO, Fla. – As of the 8 a.m. update on Saturday, the National Hurricane Center has identified two areas with a medium chance for tropical development.
One area has a higher interest because it could develop into a storm this week in the Gulf of Mexico, with a 40% chance of formation in the next seven days.
A low-pressure system might form in the coming days and conditions look favorable for development as it moves northward into the Gulf. A tropical depression could form around mid to late next week. However, since this potential development is still over a week away, it’s too early to predict any impacts to the U.S.

The second area being monitored has a low chance (20%) for development in the next two days and a medium chance (60%) in the next seven days. This wave near the coast of Africa is expected to enter a favorable environment for development.
The next names on the list are Kirk and Leslie.
Tropical Storm Joyce is moving over the open Atlantic and is expected to remain a tropical storm through the next several days.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Isaac is a Category 2 storm with winds of 105 mph, moving northeast at 20 mph. It is expected to weaken as it moves over cooler waters by the end of the week.
