ORLANDO, Fla. – If you’re new to Florida, or even if you’ve been here a while, it’s always good to hear from your neighbors about the best ways to get through hurricanes.

As Hurricane Milton makes it way across the Sunshine State, right through Central Florida, a viewer named Michele, of Poinciana, shared some helpful tips, adding that oftentimes the worst part of the storm is enduring the aftermath.

“I hope this helps someone,” she said.

Check out her six tips and let us know if you have any to add!

  1. Accept that you will more than likely lose power. To help with this, get some solar lights. Put them outside during the day to charge, then at night, you have a pretty good source of light. Plus, you won’t need batteries.
  2. I freeze 2 gallons of water. I keep one in my freezer, the other in my fridge. This will keep your food much cooler than a traditional cooler with ice cubes that melt quickly. Plus, you have water to drink when they defrost.
  3. Make sure all your dishes are done and your trash is outside. You will need to open your windows for air, and the last thing you want on top of everything else you’re dealing with is mosquitoes, flies and God only knows what other bugs will come inside.
  4. You can always charge your phone in your car, and sit there for a short spell for A/C!
  5. Even getting coffee will be a huge challenge. Any place that is open will be a mob scene. I made a large jug of iced tea to hold me over.
  6. Take a shower just before the storm hits. Who knows when you will get your next hot shower. Plus, I keep several packages of baby wipes on hand to do a quick bath while waiting for the power to return. Keep them in the fridge so you can cool off when you use them.
