DeLAND, Fla. – Volusia County leaders said Tuesday that Hurricane Milton caused an estimated $267 million worth of damage to over 5,100 properties.

Leaders provided the update during a council meeting.

“During the storm itself, we saw the highest rain level that we officially got from the National Weather Service was in Ormond Beach, believe it or not 16.52 inches. The lowest level we saw was approximately 7.5 inches,” said Clint Mecham, director of emergency management in Volusia County.

Anita Rhuhlac lives in the Wellington Woods community off Orange Camp Road in DeLand. Part of the road is still flooded from Milton, which caused some homes to be evacuated.

“It’s gone down some from what it was before, but there’s a house down there that’s pretty swamped. I didn’t get a look at that, but it’s going to take a little while. It took a while for the last storm, too,” Rhuhlac said.

County leaders said they activated five shelters and two special need shelters and housed over 1,000 evacuees during the storm.

Sandbag locations reopened this week as well for people living near the St. Johns River, which is expected to keep rising at least through the weekend.
