Brace yourselves for a whirlwind of a weather week in Central Florida

Increased chances of rain through Wednesday

(KPRC 2)

The last few weeks in central Florida have been interesting to say the least.

From pretty absurd warm ups, back to frigid morning and overnight temperatures. Just last week, we had one day of below average temperatures before rebounding within the span of 24 hours.

It just keeps getting better and better.

Currently in the weather center we’re tracking increased chances of rain across our viewing area not only today, but tomorrow into Wednesday.

Chances for rain continue to rise as we go through Tuesday and especially Wednesday (WKMG 2024)

We have an interesting feature floating just off our east coast, being nudged closer and closer by dominant high pressure over the western Atlantic. This is called an “inverted” trough.

As the name implies, the trough itself is upside down in comparison to where we’d usually see them. Troughs generally move through the mid-latitude areas of the U.S. They originate up near the Canadian/U.S border, and help to pull new batches of cooler air down into the lower forty eight.

In this case, we’ve seen a bit of energy breakaway in the central Atlantic, from an old, dying frontal system that worked its way out over the ocean. Now, it’s moving in a similar fashion to that of a tropical wave. But MAKE NO MISTAKE, this is far from a tropical feature.

Here's a look at our latest surface chart, reflecting that dashed line against our east coast; a sign of the inverted trough rolling in (WKMG 2024)

Regardless, the effects of winds blowing off strong high pressure over the top of this inverted trough is the perfect combo to stir the air up and produce some rain.

But WAIT – there’s more!

By Thursday and especially Friday, this same upside down trough off our coast will start to pull northward with the arrival of our next prominent cold front. As it does so, the energy helping to push the front down through Florida will help give this thing an extra nudge towards spinning into its own area of low pressure.

While this robust area of moisture begins to rotate, this will draw extra cold air down across the Florida peninsula.

As a result, our humidity and what’s left of the rainfall will be wiped out completely making way for a very cold weekend once more. Temperatures on Saturday may not even make it into the 60s for some of us.

Temperatures rise and fall again, with cold air funneling in by the weekend. Forecast highs Saturday and Sunday could continue to drop too! Watch closely (WKMG 2024)

So, in summary, we’re so back to a typical Florida pattern, with scattered showers across the peninsula through the day today into Wednesday.

Once Thursday and Friday hit we will begin to feel the winds of change on the horizon. Before we know it we’re plunging back into the wintry temperatures for your Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday.

I know what you’re thinking... and you’re right.
