Nice day on tap in Central Florida as Hurricane Maria looms

Models currently keep track away from Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Central Florida forecast calls for a nice, warm day.

"High pressure is dominating the forecast, leading to drier conditions," News 6 meteorologist Troy Bridges said. "As a light, north wind moves in, the drier air will continue to keep rain chances away for the most part."

There's a 10 percent chance of rain on Monday and Tuesday.

"Gradually, moisture will increase and we'll see a 20 percent chance of rain on Wednesday and Thursday before jumping to a 40 percent chance on Friday and Saturday," Bridges said.

The high will be near the average high on this date -- 90 degrees -- every day this week.

Pinpointing the tropics

There are three systems to watch.

Jose is a Category 1 hurricane well off the Carolinas, with winds of 90 mph. Jose is moving north at 9 mph and could have an impact on the northeastern United States. It will only impact Florida with an increased risk of rip currents over the next couple of days.

Maria is the one to watch. Right now, Maria is a Category 1 hurricane centered about 100 miles east of Martinique with maximum winds of 90 mph. Maria is closing in on the Lesser Antilles and is moving west-northwest at 13 mph.

A hurricane watch has been issued for Puerto Rico as Maria churns toward the Eastern Caribbean amid forecasts it could become a major hurricane by early Tuesday.

"At this rate, Maria will eventually impact Puerto Rico," Bridges said. "The current track has Maria moving into the Bahamas by Friday. Many of the models have the system turning north and away from Florida through the weekend, about 500 miles off our coast. If the models shift, we will have to pay closer attention."

Tropical Depression Lee has winds at 35 mph and is moving west-northwest at 10 mph in the open Atlantic. The track and models on Lee keep it out to sea.
