Mother's Day spending on the rise

8% spending increase from last year

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The National Retail Federation survey says $18.6 billion dollars will be spend this Sunday to celebrate America's moms, grandmothers, aunts, stepmoms and daughters.

According to the more than 8 thousand surveyed, the average consumer will spend $152 dollars. That's an 8% increase from last year's $140 dollar average.

And while traditional spending on flowers, cards and brunch reigns, almost 13% of consumers will give electronics such as tablets and digital cameras.

Mike Gatti, Senior Vice President at NRF, says consumers are feeling more confident and the numbers prove it.
Gatti also says Mother's Day is second only to Christmas as the biggest gift-giving holiday of the year.

Local6  was on Park Avenue in Winter Park where the lines to get into restaurants spilled into the streets.

Many said brunch as a family is standard to celebrate the person who shaped their life most, Mom!

Experts project May sales to rise 1.6% over last year, modest compared.
