Orlando fire chief under investigation after gun stolen from car

City officials say gun was taken out of unlocked car in downtown Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – An internal investigation has been launched after an Orlando Fire Department district chief's handgun was stolen from an unlocked city-owned vehicle on Monday.

Orlando police say sometime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Orlando Fire District Chief David Harris' Ruger LCP .38-caliber handgun was stolen from his car, which was parked at Church Street Market.

It's against city policy to have a weapon in the car, records show. City officials say Harris may have been carrying his gun because of concerns about the Connecticut school shooting last week.

According to a city spokeswoman, Harris reported the theft immediately and has a concealed weapon permit. He is under an internal investigation, but he hasn't been reassigned.

Also stolen from the car was a city-owned camera, which Harris used to document fire department training sessions.

The theft is under investigation and no suspects have been identified.
