19-year-old Brooke Dawkins of Orlando dies after critical injuries from crash

ORLANDO, Fla. – A University of Central Florida student who was struck by a truck near campus last week has died, according to Florida Highway Patrol troopers.

Troopers say 19-year-old Brooke Dawkins, of Orlando, was crossing the road in a crosswalk on Alafaya Trail at about 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 23, but the truck had a green light and she shouldn't have been walking.

The truck hit Dawkins, sending her to Orlando Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. She died on Wednesday, troopers said.

The accident prompted students and parents to take to social media, asking the university and the state to do more to make the stretch of Alafaya Trail near UCF safer.

It's not clear if charges will be filed in the crash.
