VIERA, Fla. – A Brevard County woman on Friday was sentenced to 40 years in prison for her role in the abusing and starving her live-in boyfriend's 12-year-old son.
"I wanted to say I'm so, so sorry that I didn't make the right decision," said a tearful Sharon Glass, 50, as she begged for mercy to Judge David Dugan Friday afternoon.
In January, a jury found Glass guilty on seven counts related to child abuse, neglect and false imprisonment. According to prosecutors, Glass and her boyfriend, Michael Marshall, starved, caged and tortured Marshall's son.
Police found the boy locked away, lying on the bathroom floor of the couple's Titusville home in March of 2012 weighing just 40 pounds.
Judge Dugan said in his whole career he'd only seen a couple of cases as bad as this one.
"This was cold, this was calculated and this was evil," said Dugan
In an effort to reduce his daughter's prison sentence, Glass' father also addressed the court saying that his daughter was always a good person and a good mother to her kids, but Judge Dugan didn't agree and sentenced her to 40 years in prison.
If Glass gets out of prison, she will be put on probation for 30 years, the judge ruled.
Michael Marshall pleaded no contest to 11 counts related to aggravated child abuse and unlawful imprisonment in February. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for next month where he could face up to 30 years in prison.
Prosecutors say the boy, now at the age of 14, is doing better and has found a new family to take care of him.
