DELTONA, Fla. – Drivers along Interstate 4 need to stay on guard after a driver said a fake sheriff's deputy pointed a gun at him near Deltona.
It happened after the victim, who asked to stay anonymous, said he got caught up in the middle of a road rage fight between other drivers on DeBary Avenue near Enterprise Road.
"He's telling me he's a cop. He came to my car and didn't show a badge, but pointed a gun at me," the Deltona man told 911 dispatchers Wednesday evening.
He was driving home along I-4 when his car got in between two vehicles entangled in road rage. He said the drivers were shouting at each other down the highway.
He took exit 108 to try to escape, but so did the red Pontiac Grand Prix and white Chevrolet pickup truck. While stopped at the light and trapped between two angry drivers he saw the driver of the red Pontiac get out with a gun in his hand.
"He got behind me and came out with a gun saying he's a sheriff's deputy, wanted to see my license and registration. I said, 'No, let me see your badge,'" he said. "I was scared."
With the gun inches from his head, he stepped on the gas and drove off.
Deputies said the suspect was not law enforcement and they want to catch him before he pretends to be a deputy again.
"I'm very, very lucky he didn't do anything worse. I was in a lot of shock," he said. "I hope it doesn't happen to anybody else."
The victim said the fake deputy was a man in his 40s or 50s, with crew cut-style dark hair, wearing a camouflaged T-shirt and jeans. He was driving a red 1997 or 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix that was low to the ground with oxidized headlights and a sunroof.
