MIAMI – Officials in South Miami passed a resolution in favor of splitting Florida into two states, according to the Sun Sentinel.
The resolution comes after lawmakers say they do not feel the state is doing enough to combat rising sea levels.
The move would make South Florida the 51st state in the country.
Orange, Brevard and Polk counties would serve as the northern most borders for the new South Florida state, which would have 24 counties in all.
For the move to be implemented, however, it would have to be approved by state legislators in Tallahassee.
