Father arrested, boy in state custody

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Polk County deputies say an 8-year-old boy who was last seen fleeing from a crash on Interstate 4 with his father has been found at home and is in state custody after his father's arrest.

Deputies said Jonathan Smittle was last seen near a crash with his father, Christopher, on I-4 near mile marker 51 at 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Witnesses reported Jonathan Smittle limping from the crash scene.

Jonathan and Chris Smittle's last known address is 2709 SW 11th Place in Cape Coral and deputies had said earlier Thursday they believed Smittle was returning the home.

According to WINK News, police were outside of Smittle's Cape Coral home on Thursday afternoon and Smittle was inside, refusing to come out. The standoff ended with Smittle and Jonathan both coming out of the house.

Jonathan is in Department of Children and Families custody.
