OCALA, Fla. – Marion County deputies say two people are dead in an apparent murder-suicide shooting at an Ocala retirement community.
The shooting was reported just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the On Top of the World retirement community on Southwest 93rd Place.
When deputies arrived, they said they found June Jackson, 60, suffering from a gunshot wound in her neighbor's front lawn. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.
Deputies said they secured a perimeter and through leads, found that Clifton Erhardt, 51, was a possible suspect. Erhardt was not seen leaving the home after the shooting and when deputies went into the home, they found Erhardt dead inside of the home.
It is believed that Erhardt's wound was self-inflicted, deputies said, but a medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
Deputies said it appears Jackson and Erhardt were dating, but the motivation of the shooting has not been released.
The shooting is being investigated as a murder-suicide, according to deputies.
Earlier, deputies urged residents to stay in their homes.
"What happened at On Top of the World today is truly a tragedy," said Sheriff Chris Blair in a release. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of these two individuals and with the On Top of the World community. I would like to commend the men and women of the Marion County Sheriff's Office for their professionalism during this incident and for going above and beyond when duty calls to protect the residents of Marion County."
