Deltona woman arrested for hitting child with wooden spoon, deputies say

9-year-old girl suffers multiple bruises on back, buttocks, arms, legs

DELTONA, Fla. – A Deltona women was arrested for child abuse after an elementary school teacher noticed multiple bruises on a 9-year-old student, deputies said.

A Friendship Elementary school administrator told the Florida Department of Children and Families on Monday that the girl’s back, arms and legs had multiple bruises, according to the police report.

Volusia County deputies and a DCF investigator documented bruises on the child, including eight bruises on her buttocks, scratches on her back and handprints on her buttocks, according to the arrest report.

Amy Nilson, 30, admitted to deputies that she hit the child with a wooden spoon on Nov. 18 while disciplining her for biting the suspect, according to the report.  Nilson said she did “not hit hard, so did not think to check for any bruising,” according to the report.

A DCF investigator also spoke with two other children in Nilson’s care. The children, 6 and 11, told the DCF investigator that they were also hit with the spoon, according to the police report.

The 6-year-old told the DCF investigator that Nilson used the wooden spoon to discipline the 9-year-old and the 11-year-old for arguing and lying.

Nilson is charged with two counts with child abuse. She was taken to the Volusia County Jail and ordered held without bond.
