SANFORD, Fla. – Multiple people called 911 Wednesday afternoon after one student shot another one near Seminole High School.
Sanford police said Jaquan Alexander Grant, 16, shot another student in the left shoulder at 1:22 p.m. The boys were on Ridgewood Avenue, less than a mile from the school and a bus with about 25 students on board was nearby.
A student who was on the bus called 911 to report the shooting. She told the operator that the shooter was wearing a gray hoodie and jeans.
"I'm pretty sure there was someone with a weapon running in front of the bus, but I couldn't see him very clearly," the girl said.
A parent who was attempting to pick up her daughter also called 911. She told authorities to arrive quickly because the gunshot victim was pacing and wandering around the area.
"I heard one pop that sounded like a gunshot. I saw two boys run-- one actually ran in front of my car--then I saw another one walking down the side of the road with what looked like blood come from his shoulder," the woman said.
The victim was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital with a non-life-threatening wound to the shoulder. While there. He told investigators that he'd been involved in a physical fight with Grant, who goes by the nickname 2K, during lunch that day.
Sanford police said Grant left school after that fight, got a gun and then confronted the victim off campus. Officials did not have information on any prior altercations between the Grant and the victim. Grant's family claims he was jumped multiple times at school.
The shooting prompted officials to put Seminole High School and nearby Millennium Middle School on lockdown while they attempted to find Grant. He was arrested at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
Grant made his first appearance Thursday in front of a Seminole County judge. The 16-year-old's mother was in court with him.
The judge denied bond and ordered Grant to remain in secure detention. His arraignment is set for April 3.
When he was arrested in the shooting, Grant was on probation for burglary, grand theft and criminal mischief, according to court records.
The judge said said Grant tested positive for THC when he was booked into jail.
As Grant was escorted back to detention his mother said "I love you."
Family members said there's no way that Grant could be responsible for the shooting.
The teen is charged with one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
