Emails confirm Markeith Loyd blind in one eye

Accused murderer blinded as result of his arrest

ORLANDO, Fla.Markeith Loyd, who is accused of murdering his pregnant ex-girlfriend and an Orlando police officer, is blind in one eye as a result of his arrest in January, according to emails that he obtained.

Loyd, who faces multiple charges in the shooting deaths of Sade Dixon and Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton, obtained the emails using Florida's public records law.

Loyd was arrested Jan. 17 after a nine-day manhunt in the wake of Clayton's death. An arrest video shows an officer kicking Loyd after he crawled out of a home where he'd been hiding. Police said they used force because Loyd was resisting arrest.

"Tonight at approximately 1900 hours, Markeith Loyd was arrested. Debra Clayton's handcuffs were placed on him and he has been transported to OPH," Orlando Police Chief John Mina wrote in an email on Jan. 17. "Job well done!"

Loyd filed a Freedom of Information Act request to get the emails. One email sent to Mina said surgery would leave Loyd blind in his left eye.

Lt. Dan Brady sent Mina an update on Jan. 18 about Loyd’s condition at the hospital.

"(Orlando Regional Medical Center) needed to perform surgery on his left eye and as a result the doctor said he will be permanently blind in his left eye," Brady said. "This was as a result of the injuries Loyd received during his response to resistance."

Loyd also had facial fractures, according to that email.

New court documents were filed Tuesday revealing new details about the Dixon and Clayton shootings.

Loyd accused Dixon of cheating on him and smoking while she was pregnant, according to the documents.

Dixon also accused Loyd of holding a "gun to her head" in a previous incident, records show.

As she attempted to walk away from Loyd and back into her house, court records show he pulled a gun from his sweatshirt and shot her seven times. He also shot her brother several times.

The documents detail more information the day Clayton was shot and killed.

It states, Clayton and Loyd were in the same checkout line in Walmart before the shooting.

A witness recognized Loyd and told Clayton.

Loyd paid for his items and walked out of the store.

Clayton called for backup and confronted Loyd outside telling him to, "Get on the ground."

Surveillance video shows Loyd hiding behind a pillar in the parking lot.

For a moment, the documents show the two circled the pillar before Clayton, "wound up on the street side of the pillar without any cover."

While Clayton was on the radio calling for help, documents show Loyd shot her, causing her to fall on her back.

He fired more rounds, ultimately striking her in her neck, according to the court records.

In the filings, the state also asked the court to combine the two cases as one.

Prosecutors said the gun used in both shootings is the same and Clayton's death is a result of Loyd's warrant from the Dixon case.

Gov. Rick Scott appointed a special prosecutor after Orlando-area State Attorney Aramis Ayala announced she wouldn't seek the death penalty. The special prosecutor, State Attorney Brad King, filed notice of intent Monday to seek the death penalty.

Loyd, who previously said he would represent himself in both murder trials, asked a judge earlier this week to allow Terence Lenamon to represent him. The judge is expected to make a ruling Wednesday during a court hearing.
