Emergency responders visit flooded Flagler County areas

'This just makes me happy, I don't have anything,' Irma victim says

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – Daytona North is one of the hardest hit areas in the county when it comes to Hurricane Irma flooding.

"Some of the citizens are still inside their homes and unable to get out," Deputy Shane Meehan said.

News 6 tagged along with the Emergency Response Team in their military truck, as they first visited streets with water that's just now starting to recede.

"This just makes me happy, I don't have anything," one resident said.

Deputies then visited a more flooded area called Water Oak.

"That's probably going to be the most affected area as far as water," Meehan said.

The deeper the military truck drove into the woods, the deeper the water got. One man not only needed food and water, but gas for his car.

"I had to take my car out and you can see where I'm stuck," he said. "The last time I was here when Hurricane Matthew came, it wasn't nothing like this. This time here, ridiculous."

"When the storm comes through, they feel like they can wait (for) the water to dissipate and the power to come on. They don't realize how long it's going to take for them to get all this stuff restored," Meehan said.

Deputies told News 6 they'll be helping residents as long as they're needed.

"Whatever we can do in the sheriff's office to assist our community, we are willing to do," Meehan said.
