Pop Warner coach resigns, 2 players suspended over controversial play

Hard hit gave 11-year-old Ocoee player concussion, coach says

OCOEE, Fla. – A Pop Warner coach for the Lake Mary Rams has resigned and two players will serve suspensions after a controversial play at the end of a championship game against the Ocoee Bulldogs, a league spokesman said.

Video provided by Ocoee coach Ellis Daniley shows several members of the Rams rushing toward the Ocoee players before the ball was snapped. Three players were knocked down, with one suffering a concussion, Daniley said.

The Bulldogs were winning 37-0 at the time of the play, which Daniley believes was intentional. The Rams said the players simply jumped offsides.

A Mid-Florida Pop Warner spokesman said one of the Rams coaches stepped down. Two of the students involved in the play are suspended for the first game next season, the league spokesman said.

It's not known if any other discipline will be handed down, and Pop Warner officials said their investigating is ongoing.
