ORLANDO, Fla. – All three of the teenagers charged in the beating death of a 15-year-old boy in Winter Park went before judges Friday afternoon.
Simeon Hall and Jesse Sutherland were charged as adults with manslaughter in the death of Roger Trindade, who was found unconscious at Central Park in 2016 and later died.
Earlier this week, the Orange Osceola State Attorney's Office filed an additional battery charge against both Hall and Sutherland.
A third 15-year-old boy was sentenced Friday on a witness tampering charge related to the case.
He was sentenced to a nonsecure program, which is the least restrictive detention program offered by the juvenile justice system.
The teen's attorney was seeking probation after his client entered a no-contest plea in January.
"Our goal was to get, we wanted probation," attorney Trey Flynn said. "(The teen) has, over the last year, built himself up and rehabilitated himself in the outside world."
After the teen is assessed next week, he will head to the program. It was unclear how long he will stay there.
Trindade's parents did not believe the teenager's remorse for his actions.
"For me, it's like theater, you know? He's doing this because he wants to stay free," Trindade's mother, Adriana Thome, said. "That's it."
Trindade's father called the sentencing "a little bit of justice."
Hours later, the Trindade family was back in the courtroom, this time for the hearings of Sutherland and Hall.
Hall sat in the courtroom silent. Within minutes, he left. His trial is set for the end of March.
Sutherland sat with his defense attorneys as his probation officer, grandmother and father addressed the judge.
His father, Benjamin Sutherland, was in tears as he apologized to Roger's Trindade's parents.
"Please don't take away the chance at Jesse's life," said Benjamin Sutherland.
Sutherland's attorney requested he be placed on probation, given his counseling and allowed to continue his education to get his GED certificate.
The state still pushed for him to be tried as an adult.
The judge called for a recess to allow more time to look at the case and all facts involved. Once that decision has been made a pretrial conference will take place.
The defense team will decide whether it would like to make a plea deal or take the case to trial.
