What's the deal with warning lights on construction vehicles?

Trooper Steve answers viewer questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Martin, of Winter Garden, asked, “What are the rules for construction and utility vehicles when they are using their lights?"

"It’s pretty simple, but sometimes we forget about the distractions they can cause when not used in the right manner," Trooper Steve said. "Construction zones are clearly marked, and the way we know who is working is when they have that nifty flashing white and amber light on."

Trooper Steve said the same rule applies to city and county utility work vehicles.

"Unless inside of a working zone or working on a project, workers should not have those lights on," he said. "I have personally seen this way too many times with some local vehicles that leave their front and rear strobe lights on while traveling to and from assignments. This is not only illegal, but it could cause for unwanted distractions."

Trooper Steve said it's simple: If you’re working, lights on. If you’re not working, lights off.
