DELTONA, Fla. – A brush fire shut down part of I-4 West in Deltona Saturday afternoon, troopers said.
A fire started near mile markers 111 and 112, causing the Florida Highway Patrol to close the right lane of westbound traffic in the area. The 350-acre fire was 50 percent contained as of Saturday evening.
Some homes were evacuated due to the fire. Authorities said the problem is the wind, which was driving the fire. Two choppers were deployed to dump water.
Roads nearby were still shut down. All eastbound lanes of I-4 were still open, troopers said.
The Highway Patrol said the smoke was blowing away from the interstate, but troopers remained at the scene to monitor the fire. Crews are expected to be out in the area throughout the evening.
Orange City police said there were no changes throughout the night Saturday. The size and containment of the fire were the same Sunday morning.
Veterans Memorial Parkway remained closed from Harley Strickland Boulevard to Rhode Island and East Rhode Island remained closed from Veteran's Memorial Parkway to South Leavitt Avenue, police said.
Fire officials said the Veteran's Memorial Fire was 75 percent contained around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
