VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Daytona Beach woman who was arrested in connection with the death of her 14-year-old son has been indicted on capital murder, according to the office of R.J. Larizza, state attorney for the Seventh Judicial Circuit.
The case of Talia Nelson, 43, was heard by the Volusia County Grand Jury on Tuesday, Larizza’s office said in a statement. The indictment was handed down that afternoon, charging her with first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child and aggravated child abuse, the statement reads.

Nelson’s son reportedly weighed 33 pounds when he was discovered last month by Daytona Beach police officers. Found severely malnourished and dehydrated at the Carolina Club Apartments on New Year’s Day, the boy was originally described as “an obviously neglected 14-year-old male,” seen to have “fresh bruising on his face and linear scars across his torso, back and legs,” prosecutors said.
After the boy was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said an arrest warrant was obtained for Nelson once the medical examiner performed an autopsy on her son and determined the cause of his death to be homicide.
Assistant State Attorney Andrew Urbanak is the prosecutor assigned to the homicide case, the statement reads.
