Ways to test your brain health during Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Neurologist Dr. Anthony LoGalbo joins Breakfast With Bridgett

ORLANDO, Fla. – Each morning on “Breakfast With Bridgett” there are interesting stories and interviews, plus weather and traffic to help you plan the day.

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. On Tuesday, a board-certified clinical neurologist from Health First shared the latest in brain health.

Dr. Anthony LoGalbo said while specialized scans are making it easier to detect some markers for Alzheimer’s, it’s still not a 100% indicator for the disease.

And medicines like Lecanemab can help slow the progression, but there’s still no cure.

He said health maintenance and active lifestyles are key factors in the fight and that includes testing your brain health.

“Being able to evaluate, thinking abilities, learn new info, language skills, thinking speed, reaction time, problem-solving, by doing this kind of neurological scan, we can better understand how someone’s brain is functioning. Often if someone comes in early enough, we can identify they may be showing early signs of declining from what’s normal for them, but maybe they’re not quite to Alzheimer’s yet. And they’re in this category we define as mild cognitive impairment 2110 or MCI. Some people who develop it do go on to develop dementia, some do not,” Dr. LoGalbo said.

“I often encourage people as well to do things that are outside of their comfort zone. We tend to gravitate towards things that are familiar to us. Switch it up, do things to activate different parts of our brain and challenge us in a different way. That’s also a real critical piece even for younger folks that might be concerned about something like this,” he said.
