City of Orlando to vote on adding school speed zone cameras

Vote comes after Eustis installed cameras earlier this year

ORLANDO, Fla. – The city of Orlando on Tuesday will vote on a speed camera enforcement program in school zones.

Orlando leaders are looking to add cameras to as many as 60 more schools, but the first step is passing an ordinance covering 23 campuses. The devices would take pictures of drivers going at least 10 mph over the speed limit and issue $100 tickets.

There are cameras already up and running in other places, like Eustis, where hundreds of people were caught breaking the law in just a matter of days.

Eustis Police Chief Craig Capri told News 6 that in just five weeks, there were more than 1,300 tickets.

“I didn’t think it would be that high honestly,” Capri said. “I figured the warning would have sent the message. Hopefully, the warning would have curtailed that behavior. Evidently, the warning didn’t do the job. I think once we hit the wallet, the pocketbook, you’ll realize $100 is a lot of money.”

One driver was cited five times in two days.

“Sounds like a guy that doesn’t know what’s going on and that’s a problem,” Capri said.

If Orlando approves the program, the city council will hold a second vote next month. If passed, it’s unclear when they would be installed.
