ORLANDO, Fla. – September is National Food Safety Education Month.

On Breakfast with Bridgett, two registered dietitians from Eat Well Exchange stopped by to discuss food safety and preventing foodborne illness.

The biggest known cause of foodborne illness and even death is bacteria and washing raw meats can increase the risk of spreading bacteria.

That’s why the USDA does not recommend washing raw meats, but registered dietitian Ashley Carter says many people still do it anyway, so she recommends some guidance on safer practices around that topic.

“The issue of washing the chicken is that the bacteria can splash to counters and surfaces and in that sink you’ll put other foods in. So I would recommend washing that chicken in a bowl, that way you still satisfy your cultural needs to make sure your chicken is clean, but also you’re stopping that spread of bacteria,” she explained.
