‘Retired’ home thief explains how to avoid fraud, title theft

Matt Cox joins Breakfast with Bridgett

ORLANDO, Fla. – Home title fraud and theft is a growing problem in Florida. In fact, our News 6 Investigators have covered this.

On Breakfast with Bridgett, I talked to a man who used to steal home titles about how to protect yourself.

Matt Cox is a convicted felon who served 12 years in prison. Now, he’s an advocate for helping raise awareness about this crime, which has gotten worse since the days he was involved in it.

“Technology has made it easier to do now. Anybody can type up a deed, search property records online,” he explained. “Everything so much easier now than 20 some years ago.”

Cox said title monitoring services is something you need in place now in the event something happens to your title. He recommends Home Title Lock service and says coverage can be as low as $1 a day.

State lawmakers introduced a bill to help protect Floridians against title theft, but it died because lawmakers didn’t think it was strong enough.
