OVIEDO, Fla. – A teen accused of recording a man in a men's restroom at a local Publix has been arrested on a video voyeurism charge, according to the Oviedo Police Department.
Police posted surveillance photos on social media Thursday morning, showing the teen at Publix on East Broadway Street and asking for the public's help in identifying him.
Hours later, police announced that the suspect had been identified as 18-year-old Sage Miller and said he has been arrested on a video voyeurism charge.
Lt. Travis Cockcroft said investigators got several calls from the community, including from the suspect himself.
"We started getting calls, 'I think I know who that is, I think I know who that is,' and then the suspect actually called and said, 'My picture is on your Facebook, why?'" Cockcroft said. "We said we'd love for you to come in and talk to us about what's going on."
Cockcroft said the victim was using a urinal at the grocery store and when he looked down, he saw someone in the stall next to him had placed a phone under the partition to record the man at the urinal.
The victim left the restroom to tell employees about what happened and point out Miller to them, Cockcroft said. The victim reported the incident to police a few hours later.
Police said Miller saw his photos on the Oviedo Police Department post and contacted authorities to find out why he was wanted since the post only mentioned a "suspicious incident."
Cockcroft said detectives interviewed Miller.
"He was cooperative and the detectives did find enough reason to make the arrest," he said.
Cockcroft said Miller gave investigators permission to look at his home, which provided them with enough evidence to keep the phone and get a warrant, Cockcroft said.
Cockcroft credits social media for helping investigators solve this case so quickly.
"The more eyes the better. Social media lets us get out there really quick, a lot quicker than seeing something on the news. It's all day long, it's constantly 24/7," he said.
Miller was booked into the Seminole County Jail on Thursday and is scheduled for a first appearance in front of a judge Friday at 2 p.m.
Police said this appears to be a random incident and they don't know of any other victims, but there could possibly be more. Anyone with information is asked to call Oviedo police.
A Publix spokesperson told News 6 the store is working with law enforcement on this issue.
