While some believe you are never too old to appeal to your inner child’s desire to enjoy the activity, a poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) showed that 24% of Americans actually believe trick-or-treating should end between the ages of 13 and 15.

Voters between the ages of 45 and 64 most strongly shared this belief, according to the poll.

Leading the poll results at 25% was the common answer that kids should trick-or-treat for as long as they want. This belief was popular among younger voters. The poll showed 42% of voters under 30 years old said trick-or-treating should go on as long as the heart desires.

According to FDU’s survey, 3% of Americans said kids should never start trick-or-treating in the first place, with the majority of those voters being over the age of 65.

In the survey, respondents were asked at what age children should stop trick-or-treating on Halloween. Among those respondents who gave an age, the average response was 13.5, though a quarter of Americans say that kids should go on trick-or-treating for as long as they like, and 3 percent are against the practice at any age. Older Americans are more likely to say that kids should stop trick-or-treating at ages 11 or 12; younger Americans are more likely to say that kids of any age who want to trick-or-treat should.
