Police search for Titusville graffiti vandal

Half-dozen locations tagged near downtown Titusville

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Defined by nature, history and space, Titusville is getting noticed this week for a much less desired reason, graffiti on a half-dozen different locations.

That includes Wild Ocean Market on Park Avenue.

The seafood business was tagged earlier this month.

The unknown vandal tainted a giant mural covering the building for several years.

"Considering we already had art on the wall, I would consider it vandalism," said Chris Merrifield, a manager at Wild Ocean Market. "It's very disappointing because it's a beautiful mural."

The seafood store painted over the graffiti, but that part of the mural as it was originally, will perhaps never be restored.

"To do it properly is very expensive," said Merrifield. "It's a shame that we had to cover what was there."

Police say the business is one of a half-dozen locations near downtown all vandalized by the same unknown person.

Police say the vandal leaves a pair of common traits in his or her work- a smiley face and an arrow.

"The graffiti is very distinctive," said Titusville Police spokeswoman Amy Matthews. "We want a beautiful town and we're so proud of the beautiful downtown we have now. The disgrace of someone destroying someone else's property is something we're going to take care of right away."

If police catch anyone, that person will be charged with felony counts of criminal mischief.

If you know who is responsible, you're asked to call Titusville Police at 321-223-5316 or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
