FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis went to a Home Depot in Fort Myers on Tuesday to stress the importance of being prepared for hurricane season.

DeSantis was joined by Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie and Florida Senate President Kathleen Passidomo to talk about the Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, which is currently underway in Florida.

The holiday allows people to buy select hurricane season supplies, such as batteries, flashlights, generators. Also pet supplies are sales tax-free.

The holiday runs through June 14, and you can learn the details on ClickOrlando.com’s hurricane page.

DeSantis also urged Floridians to have a plan, including what to do if they need to evacuate.

“You don’t need to go to Georgia. You don’t need to go to other states. You don’t need to drive to Miami or Jacksonville. You have an ability to shelter internally and you’re basically just getting to higher ground,” DeSantis said. “Any place you would go for a hotel or shelter is going to be able to withstand the winds. It’s really just getting away from the water which can represent a significant threat to life and land.”

DeSantis also pointed out that all counties have at least one pet-friendly shelter and many hotels are pet-friendly, so you don’t have to worry about leaving a pet behind if you need to leave.
