DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A student said he feared for his life Monday night when he was carjacked while leaving a Daytona State College class, police said.
The 24-year-old student was about to get into his 2008 BMW around 8 p.m. when a man wearing a black hoodie and black gloves starting running toward him, according to a Daytona Beach police incident report. The man pointed a gun at the victim and demanded he hand over the keys to the BMW, police said.
"He was sitting down at the chair and he saw me unlocking my car and he started running at me, with a gun pointing," the victim told 911.
Police said the man told the student he would shoot him if he moved, so the student, who feared for his life, complied with the carjacker's demands.
The armed man told the student to lie down on the ground and then drove off in the BMW, according to the incident report. The victim told 911 he didn't know which way the man went, but he was driving "like crazy."
Police canvassed the area and found the car at an apartment complex in Holly Hill, but they were unable to find the accused carjacker.
Daytona Beach Police said they were able to track down the student's car by tracking the "Find my I phone app."
After the incident, Students told News 6 they were keeping their eyes peeled.
"It's definitely pretty crazy that it happened on campus," student Mario Goss said.
"There are going to be opportunities for people to come and do stuff like that. It just goes back to being cautious and watching yourself," student Holly Hires said.
Daytona State College told News 6 it immediately sent out a text alert to students and have since beefed up security on campus.
